Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei stated that the company exercised its First Amendment rights by refusing the Pentagon's terms of use for its AI model, Claude.
Amodei asserted that "disagreeing with the government is the most American thing in the world" and that Anthropic "stood up for the values of this country." This comes after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth threatened to blacklist Anthropic and President Donald Trump ordered federal agencies to stop using its products, labeling the company "radical left, woke." Amodei indicated that Anthropic has not received formal notification of these actions and would challenge them in court if necessary, while still expressing interest in working with the Defense Department within their established "red lines" regarding mass domestic surveillance and autonomous weapons. In parallel, OpenAI has finalized a deal with the Defense Department.
